Walking on Hot Concrete Pavement

Concrete can be really hot in the summer, hence stepping barefoot, or even sitting on it can be very uncomfortable, even unthinkable to some.
Pet owners should also be extra mindful about this situation. The organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals reminded pet owners to be conscious about the temperature of concrete pavements when walking their dogs in the summer.
“On an 87-degree day, asphalt temperatures can reach 140 degrees, hot enough to cause burns, permanent damage and scarring after just one minute of contact. Rapid burns and blistering can occur at 150 degrees. Hot sidewalks, pavement and parking lots can not only burn paws, they also reflect heat onto dogs’ bodies , increasing their risk of deadly heatstroke. If you wouldn’t put your dog in a frying pan, please don’t make him or her walk on hot pavement. Always test the pavement with your hand before setting out (too hot to touch is too hot for Spot), walk early in the morning or late at night when it’s cooler, carry water and take frequent breaks in shady spots and never make dogs wear muzzles that restrict their breathing.”

A Good Example
This pet owner featured over at Examiner.com has been sensitive enough to protect his dog from the dangers of walking on really hot concrete pavement.
“A homeless man in Glendale, Arizona, was recently on the receiving end of help after a good Samaritan noticed him struggling to care for his dog. Lisa Peterson spoke to the man and learned that the pavement is so hot that he was carrying his dog, “Roger,” around-the-clock, in order to spare him from burning his feet.”

LittleThings meantime featured an inspiring story about a teenager who hit her head in the pavement, was pronounced brain dead, and suddenly became conscious following a pray over session. “That’s when Jeff Stickel entered her life and changed everything. A chiropractor and devout Christian, Jeff heard Taylor’s story and had wanted to visit her. But when he walked into her hospital room and saw her condition, he decided against working on her. But before leaving, he asked the Hales if they would join him in a prayer. Jeff placed his hand on the unconscious teen’s neck, and the family bowed their heads. That afternoon, Taylor’s life support was going to be turned off.”

Sidewalks have stories to tell. There are a lot of daily occurrences that happen by these concretized pathwalk that some may be amusing, some may be sad, some even weird or at times tragic. American Society of Concrete Contractors
Just like the story of this dog featured over at Pet Plus. “In what can only be described as a miracle, earlier this week a Portland resident, Ted Nelson, managed to save a 5-year-old Bichon Frise named Mordy from plummeting to his death off a 14-story balcony – by catching him! The whole thing started when Ted, looking out his window, noticed that there was a small dog out on the balcony in the apartment building across the street. It appeared that the dog had slipped through the railing and was trapped on the outside ledge, with nothing between him and the sky.”

Not so happy about it
The website Hyperallergic.com meantime pointed on the graffiti written in the wall of a set used by a TV series. In Brazil, a man lifted a car that is blocking the pedestrian way, as featured over at Mashable.com. “This mysterious pedal-pusher, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, has had enough of car owners who don’t respect cyclists, so he simply lifts a parked car out of his path. Reddit did some investigating into the car (as per usual) and found it was a Fiat Uno, a car known to be relatively light. The vehicle boasts a curb weight, or the total weight of a car without occupants, of approximately 1,600 pounds, according to auto-data.net. So this particular strongman cyclist was most likely deadlifting a couple hundred pounds.”

Newborn along a path walk?
CNN featured meanwhile, a story on a newborn who have been buried alive in a walking path in California. American Society of Concrete Contractors
“The crying coming from under a block of asphalt sounded like it was from a cat to Angelica Blount. But it turned out to be an abandoned baby that police say was deliberately buried under debris along a Los Angeles area walking path.”

Psychedelic Mushroom Compound Found to Grow and Repair Brain Cells
You may know them as “shrooms”, “Magic mushrooms”, psilocybic mushrooms, or you may not know them at all. They are a natural plant that, like marijuana, is banned by the U.S. Government. But like marijuana, these mushrooms may not be without medical properties. Like marijuana, they could deserve a place on natural medicine shelves for their ability to treat depression, eradicate mental illness, and improve cognition – not in police evidence rooms.
According to research from the University of South Florida, psilocybin, the active component within psychedelic mushrooms, is able to grow new brain cells—potentially offering treatment for mental illness and improving cognition.
The study, published in Experimental Brain Research, says psilocybin is able to bind to special receptors in the brain that stimulate healing and growth. In the case of these mushrooms, brain cell growth occurs. In mice, the researchers found psilocybin to actually help repair damaged brain cells and cure or relieve PTSD and depression.
Lead researcher, Dr. Juan R. Sanchez-Ramos, tested the effects of psilocybin by training mice to fear an electric shock when they heard a noise associated with the shock. Then, by giving them psilocybin, the mice were able to stop reacting to the noise-trigger much faster than those mice not treated with the mushroom compound.
“The proposition that psilocybin impacts cognition and stimulates hippocampal neurogenesis is based on extensive evidence that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) acting on specific 5-HT receptor sub-types (most likely the 5-HT2A receptor) is involved in the regulation of neurogenesis in hippocampus,” says Dr. Sanchez-Ramos according to NaturalNews. “The in vitro and in vivo animal data is compelling enough to explore whether psilocybin will enhance neurogenesis and result in measurable improvements in learning.”
Other research also shows that this same compound could greatly help with depression, helping the majority of participants in one study achieve great well-being.
Psilocybin is referred to as a “nootropic” agent, or one that has numerous functions in the brain that can improve hippocampus health. The hippocampus is part of the brain responsible for learning as well as converting short-term memory to long-term memory. New brain cells in the hippocampus from the psilocybin translates into a healthier and sharper brain overall.
The research on psychedelic mushrooms is limited—far more limited than the research on marijuana. Because these mushrooms are known for causing hallucinations, unguarded self-treatment isn’t recommended. However, this plant, like marijuana, does not deserve a place in the Schedule I classification of illegal substances. Like marijuana, the U.S. government has determined ‘shrooms as having no medicinal value’—an obviously-flawed determination.
